On Wednesday, the Times' Editorial Board - which consists of 13 of the paper's opinion journalists - published an essay titled 'A Misstep by the Organizers of Pride', describing the decision by NYC Pride as 'worrisome'. The left-leaning New York Times has hit out at the organization, as has Democrat Mayor Bill de Blasio - who has publicly clashed with NYPD leaders after he slashed $1 billion from their annual operating budget. 'The sense of safety that law enforcement is meant to provide can instead be threatening, and at times dangerous, to those in our community who are most often targeted with excessive force and/or without reason,' the group said, telling police to stay at least one block back from any festivities.īut the decision has outraged many who say NYC Pride is not practicing the inclusion that it professes to promote and that it seeks for its own LGBTQ members. In a statement on Saturday, the organization urged cops to take time away from the parade to 'acknowledge their harm and correct course moving forward'. Over the weekend, NYC Pride announced plans to prohibit uniformed members of the NYPD from taking part in their LGBTQ celebrations until at least 2025.
